Rep. Reichley Says Gov Earmarks Economic Development Funds for Political Legacy Projects - 7/7/2010
After passage of a particularly tight state budget, reactions are beginning to be heard in Harrisburg about how the Rendell administration plans to spend the $600 million borrowed to fund economic development projects. Among those expenditures are $20 million earmarked to fund new institutions named after two of Governor Rendell’s closest political allies. Rep. Doug Reichley (R-Berks & Lehigh) a member of the House Appropriations Committee, said in today’s economy, funds designated for economic development should not be used for pet projects aimed at building a political legacy. The Pennsylvania House worked well into the July 4th holiday weekend in order to complete action on this year’s state budget. Rep. The Pennsylvania House worked into the evening on Wednesday to pass an on-time state budget for the upcoming fiscal year and lawmakers offered their assessment of the $28 billion compromise spending plan. Rep. Doug Reichley (R-Berks & Lehigh) said he felt the new budget plan was an improvement over the governor’s original proposal, but that state spending was still too high. The Pennsylvania House this week debated and then shelved legislation that would have imposed a $317 million tax increase to help cover more than $1 billion in additional state spending proposed by the governor earlier this year.
