Taxpayers and lawmakers joined together for the annual Pennsylvania State Capitol Taxpayers Protest Tuesday in Harrisburg. Speaking at the event were representatives of more than 10 taxpayer groups who spoke in opposition to the budget plan put forth by the Rendell Administration to increase state spending by more than $1 billion and boost taxes to cover skyrocketing state deficits. Rep. Reese Responds to the Governor's Call to Increase Personal Income Tax - 6/16/2009
Governor Rendell on Tuesday called for a 16.28 percent statewide increase in personal income tax to fill part of the enormous $3.2 billion deficit facing Pennsylvania in this year’s state budget. The Governor’s plan would boost PIT to a 3.57 percent tax rate for the next three years. Rep. Mike Reese (R-Westmoreland & Fayette) said the Governor’s initial call for a temporary tax increase could easily become permanent and that he needs to look harder for spending cuts in a bloated budget plan. Questions about the Rendell administration’s plans for spending federal stimulus money in Pennsylvania have led House Republican lawmakers to introduce a package of bills to ensure there will be adequate oversight and accountability in deciding how the billions of taxpayer dollars will be spent.
